With only 3 ingredients (and 1 of those is optional) this Berry Smoothie with Banana couldn’t get any easier to make. Let’s look into each of the ingredients a bit more!

This adds creaminess to the smoothie and serves as the base. The Greek yogurt also adds some protein!

Of course we need our blueberries. Frozen is a great option as they are usually more cost effective and add texture to the smoothie. If you have fresh berries to use up instead, no worries! Consider replacing the fresh banana with frozen or adding ice.

Simple and sweet! I made the recipe with a medium sized one, but you can go larger. If you want to make sure the banana flavor isn’t overpowering, just add more blueberries too. This recipe is pretty forgiving with the amounts as are most smoothies.

Now the spinach! This is optional and you can totally make the smoothie without it. We could be practicing some gentle nutrition by adding it if it doesn’t detract from the final product for you. I find I can’t taste this amount in the smoothie, but it still adds extra nutrients.

Say it with me again: “A smoothie isn’t a meal by itself!” It’s a yummy, refreshing drink with some nutrients, but it is not a meal replacement (also, why would we want to replace a meal?) Even if you’re having it for a snack, you may want more food with it so it’s more sustaining.

So what do you eat with it? We have fruit and a bit of protein, but we’ll want to add to that. Here are some ideas! Remember to choose what will be satisfying and enjoyable to you!

  • Avocado toast
  • Oatmeal with nut butter
  • Quesadilla + sour cream and salsa
  • Bagel Sandwich

  • Diet culture doesn’t get to “claim” foods. You can drink a smoothie (or green juice, or eat a salad) and it doesn’t mean you’re falling into diet culture.
  • Adding gentle nutrition is so different than listening to the food police! If you’re not in a place where focusing on gentle nutrition is helpful, don’t worry about it yet! It’s most important to build a foundation of a healthy relationship with food first.
